Dear friend,

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on its version of the Farm Bill this week, and it’s important to urge our senators to oppose programs that perpetuate a corrupt factory-farming food system.

There is an opportunity to add an amendment to the Senate Farm Bill based on the Opportunities for Fairness in Farming (OFF) Act (S.741) to hold USDA checkoff programs accountable and prevent checkoff dollars from being used to lobby against animal welfare reforms. This legislation, introduced by Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Cory Booker (D-NJ), would prohibit anti-competitive behavior, clarify and strengthen lobbying prohibitions, and require that checkoff budgets and expenditures be made public.

Checkoff programs have promoted industrial animal agriculture through popular slogans such as “Got Milk?” and “Pork. The Other White Meat.” Additional Farm Bill programs and subsidies have also enabled our cruel, destructive, and unhealthy factory-farm system to continue. Congress needs to be held accountable and encouraged to enact a Farm Bill that promotes healthy foods — including fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains — that are grown sustainably.

Please urge your senators to include S.741, the OFF Act, in the Farm Bill, and to promote plant-based agriculture instead of factory farming.
